Methyl Isobutyl Ketone (MIBK) is a colorless, moderately volatile organic solvent with a characteristic, mild odor and chemical formula C₆H₁₂O. Its boiling point is approximately 116–118°C, and its moderate evaporation rate allows for a consistent drying time in industry. It evaporates more slowly than MEK, making it preferred for controlled applications.
Main technical specifications
- Physical Form Colorless, clear liquid with a slight ketone odor.
- Dissolving Power: It shows high solubility in cellulosic, polyurethane, acrylic, vinyl and epoxy resins.
- Application Features: Thanks to medium-speed evaporation, it contributes to better spreading of the paint on the surface and controlled film formation.
- Volatility Lower volatility than MEK, longer open time.
- Flammability It has a low flash point and requires care in storage and use.
- Compatibility Compatible with aromatic and aliphatic solvents.
Areas of Use
- Paint and Varnish Industry: Thinner especially in cellulosic, acrylic and polyurethane systems.
- Industrial Coatings On metal, wood and automotive surfaces.
- Adhesive Production Solvent in rubber, leather and plastic adhesives.
- Chemical Industry Intermediate and solvent in the production of resins, polymers and specialty chemicals.
- Cleaning and Degreasing As a grease and dirt remover on industrial surfaces.
